junior camp leader program

Our Junior Camp Leader Program is a volunteer opportunity for motivated teenagers interested in science education and leadership training.

Junior Camp Leaders assist our Education Team in preparing and leading science experiments and activities, plan, organize and lead activities during free-play breaks (with guidance and oversight from our Education Team), and assist our young campers to ensure they have a great week of camp.

Our camps are located at Discover Science Center in Peachtree City from 8:30am-4:30pm.

Junior Camp Leaders may sign up for 2-10 weeks of summer camp (full-day sessions), and are expected to work every day for that week to maintain consistency for our campers.

Junior Camp Leaders must:

  • Be at least 13 years old (or 12 years old with Director's approval).
  • Attend one of our 2-hour training sessions (setting expectations, locations of lab supplies and safety equipment, first aid and CPR training) prior to their first week of volunteering.
  • Have a reliable means to get to work on time each day.
  • Be prepared to work each shift they signed up to work.
  • Be reliable, mature, respectful, responsible, eager to learn and like to have fun.

Junior Camp Leader duties include:

  • Being a good role model for campers.
  • Assisting our Education Team with activity preparation, classroom management, activity clean-up and maintenance of center.
  • Assisting campers during activities.
  • Developing activities (games, crafts, etc) to engage campers during free-play breaks.
  • Interacting with campers to ensure they have a fun and safe week.

Junior Camp Leaders benefit from increased levels of responsibility and independence, as well as have unique science experiences and training. Volunteer hours may be used as community service hours, and we are happy to provide reference letters for Junior Camp Leaders that perform their duties well.

There are no costs or stipends associated with being a Junior Camp Leader. It is a volunteer position, however, we take their commitment seriously and expect Junior Camp Leaders fulfill the shifts for which they registered. Junior Camp Leaders should bring their own snacks, lunch and water bottle to camp each day.

If interested, please fill out the application below and we will be in touch if we still have openings.
